Why does Excel Destination reset column definition

  • I have a number of packages to output data to Excel and do not have Excel on the server. When I created the Excel destinations and mapped the columns, all the text columns had errors (Cannot convert between unicode and non unicode)

I used the advanced editor to change all the fields from DT_WSTR or DT_NTEXT, to DT_STR and DT_TEXT, and that was the end of the matter I thought.

Every time I make any change a single column, all columns are set back to DT_WSTR. I don't know how many times I've had to perform the time wasting exercise to set them back.

Given that it is not an option to put Office on the server, is there a single step I can take to stop this happening once and for all?

  • Posted this last week and got no replies, so I thought I'd try again.

Can anyone shed any light on this (I've got to go through the pain again, because I have another change to make)?

Is there any more information I can provide that would help someone to answer this?

    TIA
