I've usually created Maintenance Plans in the past and used the Logging option to create dated report/log files for eg backups. Now on a new SQL Server, the "New Maintenance Plan" option wants to create "subplans" for me and I can't find the "Logging" option that I've used before. Can anyone explain the main differences between MaintPlans and Subplans, and where to find the Logging button for Subplans (or how to create log files with dates in their names)? Thanks

One way to log them is to use the SQL Server Agent job properties. Under Notifications, you can have it write data to the Windows log. Is that the kind of thing you're looking for?
Success/failure, completion time, etc., are all logged in the system databases for SQL Server Agent jobs.

G2 Sorry, not quite what I want to do. I have found a workaround though by creating the initial step of a plan using the Wizard - this prompts me for the location of the textual log file, and it works. I can then use the Maint Plan Designer to add subsequent steps, and it still keeps the log details correctly. Just puzzled why I'm getting "subplans" on this SQL Server (not the usual Maintenenance Plans I'm used to) and why the "Logging..." button on the top RHS of the Maint Plan Design screen has disappeared (as has the "Connections..." button). Cheers, Ian
