Crystal Reports - Which version?

  • Does anyone know which version of Crystal Reports is a good version. We are a school district on SQL Server 2000 and we were told that Crystal Reports Pro is a good product. I don't know if there is a specific version number associated with the Pro version but i do know there are newer versions such as 11 and 2008.

    thanks.

  • I wouldn't go below Crystal XI.

However, have you considered the Reporting Services that comes bundled with SQL Server 2005? It might be a better option.

  • Thank you for your suggestion. We were thinking of going with XI version or later as well.

As far as reporting services, we have SQL 2000 and not 2005 and myself nor my co-worker are too familiar with many of the features of Enterprise Manager which include the Reporting Services. I have read that it is a good feature we just don't have enough knowledge to use it.

Do you recommend some type of source to find more information on it?

  • There is a free option for Reporting Services on SQL Server 2000. This link should get you started: http://www.sqlservercentral.com/articles/reportingservicespartioverviewarchitectureandinsta/1303/[/url].

As far as 2005 Reporting Services you could start with :

    http://www.microsoft.com/sql/technologies/reporting/default.mspx

    http://www.databasejournal.com/features/mssql/article.php/3573361

    Hope that helps.

  • Thank you for your help. I appreciate it.

May I suggest "Hitchhiker's Guide to SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services"?

A great book on how to setup the services and use them!

    "Robert A. Heinlein"

  • I'll go ahead and add my 2 cents here too. SSRS is much more intuitive. This is only my personal opinion, but I go running and screaming out of the room if any suggests Crystal Reports. 😀

... And the Hitchikers book Doug mentioned is a VERY GOOD PLACE TO START!

  • We still use Crystal Reports 9, and it works fine for our needs.
