MSDTC on active/active cluster

  • I have a two node active/passive cluster which runs 3 sql server instances. I have to install a 4th instance as back-end of an ETL (SSIS)/Reporting application and move the instance/run it on the secondary node, which means that my active/passive cluster will become active/active.

I do need MSDTC to run on both nodes at this stage but, as MS recommends, MSDTC resource has its own cluster group as per the initial active/passive installation.

All instances have to use MSDTC but MSDTC appears to be running on only one of the two nodes.

How can I get MSDTC to be active for all four sql instances no matter where the instances are running from (cluster nodes)? Thank you in advance.

  • There can only ever be one copy of MSDTC running on a cluster, regardless of the number of nodes in the cluster.

Not sure of the reason why, but under the covers, communication with MSDTC is actually done by referring to the cluster name, as opposed to an instance name, hence you can only have one per cluster.
