Best backup/recovery practices in a very simplistic nutshell:
1) Find out from your users what their tolerance for data loss is, memorialize it and be sure everyone with access to the data knows about the acceptance level (known as CYA in the event of failure).
2) Setup your backup schedule based on the facts from # 1, whether it's full backups, differentials and/or logs
3) Test the backups by restoring to a dev/test server and verifiying the results. Do full restores and possibly point in time, if P-I-T is meaningful to your business.
Bottom line best practice - have backups and be sure they work. Check the corruption forum for very stark reminders of what can happen when you don't have them.
And I don't even charge a subscription fee!! 😀
