My laptop has Vista SP1 and SQL Server 2005 developer SP2.
My machine also in not part of any domain.
Accessing SSAS (also via Excel 2007) work fine.
Since I must test the cube via Excel 2003 on XP I have installed a virtual machine (Virtual PC) wirh XP and Excel 2003.
The networking between the host and the virtual machine works fine.
- I am able to ping the vista host
- I am able access the IIS host
- I am able to access also the relational engine (to load the data from a sql server table)
My firewall is correctly configured and anyway I have tested also with the firewall disabled.
On the virtual pc I have installed Excel 2003, XP SP3 and SSAS OLE DB Provider 9.0.
When i try to access a SSAS cube, the first two pass works fine (select the server and the cube - i.e. I am able to see all the cubes on the host machine) but when I select END or Layout i receive the infamous Trasport Error.
After a second dialog box "Errors in OLEDB Provider: Unable to load the component of the login window".
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Giancarlo

I read but I found no useful hints... :((
Note that while I am accessing the Olap cube the first two windows work fine, i.e. I am able to see all the cubes that are defined on the SSAS server.
It is just when i selectt end and Excel try to access the cube that it fails....
I believe that is some authorization problem.
Also my notebook is not part of any domain and I use the login \\mynotebook\MyUser... but it works with the relational engine....

For testing only, you could try to add the Everyone (and maybe even Guest) accounts to your AS roles on your PC (not the virtual) - this *might* let your VPC account have access.
Alternatively, have you tried starting Excel using RunAs and using your account from the PC?

Thank you for your suggestions, Steve.
I was able to bypass the problem saving the ID and Password on the data source.
It is not secure but I must just test the cube.
It will works in production only with pc working into a domain.
I believe that this is a bug of the oledb provider that does not prompt for user/password if the machine is not part of a domain.

Hey Olap databases can only be accessed using windows integrated security. but when you say it works when you specify the creds on the datasource. it sounds for me like its a double hop problem
example if use a is going to be authenticaed on the olap server and then also have to be authenticated on the sql server which is another virtual or physical machine. your having a double hop. and you will need to set up kerboros with spn and all that stuff.
and to clarify You cannot have double hop without using kerboros. its not supported otherwise

There are some excel add-ins that you need to install in order to connect to SSAS 2005 and later from excel 2003. If you are unable to find them on the web I have them in a zipped folder but it is just shy of 14 megs. I'll e-mail them to you if you need them.
Thanks,
Frank
