database hosting services

  • I would like to do some SQL Server development, outside of work. For various reasons, I prefer to not install SQL Server on my home network. Does anybody have any experience with SQL Server database hosting services? Any suggestions or insights? All of the services that I have (randomly) looked at seem more geared toward SQL Server used in support of web sites which is much more than I need or want. How can I evaluate the worthiness of the various services? It was rather worrisome when my search yielded numerous companies that I've never heard of.

    Thanks.

Why not install a copy of Dev Edition on a home PC? You mentioned you don't want to, but I'm curious, because it's one of my standard practices.

Why not install a copy of Dev Edition on a home PC? You mentioned you don't want to, but I'm curious, because it's one of my standard practices.

That was my initial plan but I have several reasons for not doing that.

    1. None of my three computers meet the resource requirements for the Dev Edition. I cannot justify upgrading these resources just to install the Dev Edition.

    2. I would consider purchasing another computer with adequate resources. I can justify that. However, I do not want another notebook yet I need portability of my SQL Server project. Even if I purchased a notebook, my project would be more vulnerable than if it were hosted by a reliable service (e.g. from theft, loss, hardware failure, etc.).

    3. Even if I purchased a notebook, I would not want to travel with it. That is a strong preference with several reasons behind it. For my SQL Server project, I would need the ability to do demonstrations from various locations throughout North America. If I could connect from just about any computer to a SQL Server hosting service that has my project it would be perfect. I could work on the project or demonstrate the project from anywhere with a decent connection.

If I must use a service that includes all the web app components, that would be tolerable. It just seems wasteful.

So how do I find a decent service?

  • That makes sense.

HostingLabs might accomplish what you need. If not, I'm sure you can find another. (They're just the first one that came up for me in an online search that seem to fit what you're looking for.)
