Anyone know of a good link describing the different icons and what they mean? I have been looking all over and I appear to have poor google skills. I am trying to find a description of all the different icons next to sql server instances and sql server agent. For instance, a little red squiggly line on the instance icon or a clock on the sql server agent icon. I can't seem to find explainations for these in my searching. Thanks

Not sure what you mean by the red squiggly on instances, and I think SQL Server Agent always has a clock on the icon (because it's essentially a scheduling tool). Think you could include some screen-shots of what you're talking about?

I just looked at every server I've got. I looked at all of them in Management Studio, and also looked at the 2000 ones in Enterprise Manager. All of the Server Agents had a clock on them, even the SQL 2000 copies in EM.
I'm going to hazard a guess that the change in icon means something is wrong, and the red squiggly is trying to tell you to look for what's wrong.
It's possible that right-clicking Agent on that server will give you more data. I'm not sure. I don't think I've ever run into that one before. I'd definitely start from the assumption that SQL Server is trying to tell you something is broken. (Somehow, I don't think it's asking for red licorice, if you know what I mean.)

First, let me apologize. That screen shot is from a SQL 7 instance. Upgrading it to 2005 in July. Actually have another post in the other newbie forum about it just to make sure I am going to be doing it right 🙂
I checked some more SQL server 2000 instances and all the agents had the clock. Maybe that icon change was from version 7 to 2000.
I right clicked on it and could not find anything in particular that would suggest something was wrong. I am fairly certain I have seen the red squiggly on instances of 2000 though.

Ah. I don't have any SQL 7 instances. That would explain why I'm not familiar with those.

That red "squiggle" in SQL 7 means you are connected.

Wow...you must of been looking for something particular to go back so far for a thread 🙂
Thanks for the response though! 🙂
