  In sql 2000 in the wizard you specified a retention period for files being backed up. However in 2005 this ability is goone

  I think this is available as an option. Might not be in the wizard. Did you open the maintenance plan and check if it's in there after the wizard?

  I think that you should add a Maintenance Cleanup Task to the Maintenance Plan.
