Hello,
I have a brand new Vista machine and a copy of Visual Studio 2008 which came with SQL Server 2005. I attempted to install, and it warned me of incompatibility issues with Vista, and instructed me to download SP2 upon completion. I installed, and then downloaded and installed SP2. No error messages, but no SQL Server either. The only thing showing in the start menu is SQL Server Upgrade Advisor, and Configuration Tools, but no Management Console.
Has anyone seen this before? Since I received no error message and therefore nothing to look up as far as errors, I have no idea what to do.

I have not seen it before, but could it be to do with UAC on VISTA??
It can be disabled in MSCONFIG.

Hmm, this is my machine and i am the only user and would assume I have access to install. Is that not the case in Vista?
Thanks again for posting.

Are the services there and running?
My first guess would be you installed the server components and did not install the client components.

I have SQL 2005 Dev running on Vista Home Premium (at home, of course), so it can be made to work. Here are some steps I had to go through:
Install SQL 2005
Uncheck the boxes that say, "Start these services when you finish installing" (or something like that), in the installation wizard
Patch to SP2
Reboot
Start the services and set them to autostart and auto-restart
