Render Directly to CSV

  • Is it possible to render a report directly to CSV format?

    This is the scenario:

    1. User opens Report Manager.

    2. User opens report to be run.

    3. User selects parameters and runs report.

    4. Reporting Services runs and saves results as *.csv in predefined location.

    5. User opens report from network share (Possibly even user-specific secured network folder) using third-party statistical analysis application.

If this is possible, how is it turned on? Or does this require custom re-coding of SSRS?

    Thanks in advance!

  • i'm confused. when the report runs in report viewer/manager, why can't your user(s) just export the report as CSV to the proper location?

  • We are using SSRS as a mechanism for research teams to extract raw data from a variety of sources. The results are fed into 3rd party statistical analysis packages. I am hoping to avoid the redundancy of having users run the report to the browser and then extract the data to csv.

  • but if the users have to open a browser to enter the parameters and trigger the report, then there isn't much redundancy in exporting that to CSV. it seems that a data subscription with some type scheduling is what you really need.

  • Thanks for your sugestions Antonio, we've decided to use SSRS for the more MIS/BI type reporting but will come up with an alternative solution to using SSRS to create user-generated data extracts.

Potential ideas so far include an external data connection from Excel 2007 to an SSAS 'cube' and an ODBC connection from the statistical package to the data mart.

    Thanks.

  • You could produce a report which when ran, displays one or more hyperlinks, one of which is the URL for your report with 'rs:Render=Excel' (I forget the precise syntax) tacked on the end. I don't think you can place a hyperlink directly on a Report Manager page, e.g. using the upload file facility, but obviously that would be the ideal.
