SQL2000 server not available on execution of maintenance plan...

  • Hello,

We have a problem with our sql 2000 server. Since the beginning of this year our sql server was unresponsive for 3 times. Nothing is logged in the event viewer, except that there was an unexpected shutdown :

    Event Type:Error

    Event Source:EventLog

    Event Category:None

    Event ID:6008

    Date:20/06/2008

    Time:8:33:43

    User:N/A

    Computer:DASQL01

    Description:

The previous system shutdown at 1:59:46 on 20/06/2008 was unexpected.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

    Data:

    0000: d8 07 06 00 05 00 14 00 Ø.......

    0008: 01 00 3b 00 2e 00 bc 03 ..;...¼.

    0010: d8 07 06 00 04 00 13 00 Ø.......

    0018: 17 00 3b 00 2e 00 bc 03 ..;...¼.

The weird thing is that the error occurs so now and than. If we look into it, it's always a few secons before the maintenance plan which starts at 02:00:00. The server is then completely unresponsive. Ping to to server is ok, but for the rest nothing is working, blank screen, etc.... so the only option is to restart the server with a could reboot.

Is there any way to have a more detailed log of SQL server things?

    Regards,

    Tim Van Engeland

  • What kind of maintenance plans are you running? Are there optimization tasks (reindexing) or backups only? Also, could you check the maintenance plan history? There could be more information if this is related to the maintenance plans.

  • Strange, but here is what i went through. not exactly as your situation...

I had a 70GB DB FULL Backup happening at 2.00AM, same time there is a Transaction log backup kicking off every 30 mins.. so here is the First overlap. [2]. There was another Data Mart Running off another Server, Getting Data from this 70GB DB, and took almost 1.5 Hours to complete the Load. so here was the 2nd conflict.. and this added up to hose the server up unless i killed the job..

You can check to see if you have a similar situation.

    Check your windows Schedular.

Check your autoupdate feature in windows.

check your drivers.. do you have jobs running and getting data from other LEGACY systems/Database systems (TANDEM/IBM/Oracle/RS6000). some of the interface drivers hose up the system as happened in my case with SQL 2005 and RS6000, and the same drivers worked well with SQL 2000. and the story continues.. Check the things mentioned here...

  • Hello,

    I'll try the post-SP4 updates.

The database is only 3,5 GB and the maintenance plan is as follows :

    - Integrity Check (once a week at sunday at 0:00:00)

    - Database Backup (Daily at 02:00)

    - Transaction Log Backup (Daily at 02:30)

    - Report Writing is enabled

The reason why I think the problem is causes by the maintenance

plan is that the error occurs a few secons before the backup job

needs to start and there is an empty logfile in the logfile folder.

This is for me some kind of proof.

  • If - as you say - you suspect the mp:

    - inspect the mp logging files (activate if needed)

    - start a profiler trace right befor the mp is scheduled to launch.

    - schedule the mp on Sunday during the day and see if the issue arrises ..
