Hi all,
I'm totally confused by now, reading through a few books and online material to try to figure out what the following terms mean. Sometimes it seems to me that the definitions from different sources contradict each other. I've given up on that approach and I rely on you to help me understand please. Please tell me in simple terms what the following are:
Backup Set
Backup Device
Media Set
Media Family
Thank you so much!

Let me try first.
Backup Set - records all information on each single backup and restores, such as backup time, lsn, and type.
Backup Device - records all informaiton on the backup paths, and user-defined devices.
Media Set - records information on vendors, and so on.
Media Family - Records all information on backup device, physical paths of backups.
Anyone would like to add his/her input?

Thank you for your help! This is certainly the first time that I see this kind of definition for these terms. The definitions are usually like "A backup device is a logical name that is given to a tape or disk file to which a backup can be written."
I think I would best understand these terms if an example was given. So, here's a scenario:
I have two databases. I make a full backup on Saturdays, differential backups every other day, and log backups in between. I have a tape library with 5 slots. The slots have been partitioned to 1-3 and 4-5.
Considering the above scenario, can you please tell me what is what? Sorry for being such a dummy, for some reason I'm having a real difficulty understanding these backup terms.

Again, I am trying, ...
In the backupset table, you can find the backup information, such as what databases had backups, their types, starting time, ...
Say you have a databse, databaseA. You can find the information on the backup of this database from this table. You will know this database had backup at what time and by what types.
In the table, backupdevice, you should be able to find the paths of the database backups, local disk or tape, ...
In the tabole, mediaset, you can find the detail information about the tape configurations.
In the mediafamily, you can also find the the information about the tape, plus other mediasets in your system.
Any other input by others will be more than welcome.

mediasets, mediafamilies, etc. aren't used a log. I'd save backupdevices aren't used, but some people apparently like them. I always back up to disk.
