If it is, then, we have a problem...
Our database is currently 65Gbs and takes about 1h20mns to backup (to disk) and getting slower every day (although with ups and downs).
A month ago, it was around 60Gbs and the backup only took around 20mns.
We use a cluster server with a SAN disk system, all this hosted by a third party company.
I looked at Wait Stats (I have historical snapshots) during backup time and that seems relatively consistent in proportions:
~46% ASYNC_IO_COMPLETION
~43% BACKUPBUFFER
As far as I can work it, there is nothing else running during these backups (I have a server trace showing me anything that takes 15 seconds or more).
It seems to me that this increase in Backup time is not normal and that we are therefore heading for trouble...
Any idea how I could pin point whether there is an underlying problem with our backup sub system (and pest our provider)?

If we assume every part is in healthy condition, I would like to check the free space on this server. Lower free space on a hard disk may reduce the speed of backup.
Do you use LiteSpeed?

The backup drive is roughly 340Gbs and there is at least 120Gbs free when backing up.
The data drive is about 50% full (or empty...).
Having said that, we actually ran out of space on the data drive on 20/12/07, which probably implies fragmentation. On the other hand, the backup was till taking about 20mns on 28/12/07.
We don't use any software other than Sql Server itself. We use the default backup utilities.
