sometimes backup runs for a longtime(3-4 hours) and not yet finished. In this case we have to cancel the backup job and restrat again the backup job ,then it takes only 1 hour to be completed. My question iswhy it happens .how to avaoid this situation.
Thanks,

Are you backing up across the LAN (not really recommened) or locally (faster)? Is anything else that is resource intensive running on the SQL server? Backup times are usually fairly consistent, unless of course a huge amount of data has been added/dropped.

I am taking backup locally.Sometimes it takes longer time and some times it takes normal time.Database size vary only 10 mb to 20 mb.Is it for temporary blocks it takes long time.
Thanks,

SQL 2005?
If so, check the error log, see if there are any messages about teh backup buffer size been reduced.

FYI - For quicker, more accurate responses, be aware of which forums you post to, this is for SQL2K5.
