Advice pls: MCTS 2005 or wait for MCTS 2008?

  • NM Decided to finish MCSA first.

  • That's pretty quick decision. But I would pursue teh MCTS 2005 certification. Companies will not upgrade to 2008 so quickly.

  • That's true. I'm an MCDBA, MCTS, and MC-ITP Database Administrator.

And my company hasn't even upgraded to SQL Server 2005 yet.

  • I am going for the SQL Server 2005 certification as well. I see two important reasons for SQL Server 2005 certification:

    1. The coming x years SQL Server 2005 will be widely used, in contrary to SQL Server 2008.

    2. I'm quite sure there will be an upgrade program from SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2008, giving the opportunity to be SQL Server 2008 certified really quickly.

Just my two cents 😉 ...

    Gook luck @ work!

Computers are made to solve problems you did not have in the days they didn't exist.

  • If you know the stuff, having been working with 2005, and are looking for a job or a consultant, get 2005.

If you are thinking this would be nice to have and might look for a job next year, wait for 2008. You can always spin it as 2008 has lots of stuff from 2005.

  • I've been asked by the management in my current IT company to gain this qualification even though I've personally don't see what benefits it provides me as a parttime dba (fulltime Mum to toddler). I've agreed as they are will to pay for the courses and reimburse me for a passed exam. I'm unsure how much study time this will require and how long ? I'm starting to budget 6 months. Any answers? I've undertake the maintaining an sql2005 db course so I now just need the implementing an sql2005 course, plus the extra stuff for the mcts exam. Also any suggestions as to study guides/references which are worth the cost ?

    Thanks in Advance

  • adoniadelavigne, for the Implementation & Maintenance exam, it's about 10 full days (according to Microsoft anyway) for the course & usually about twice that much if you're doing it part time.

  • 2. I'm quite sure there will be an upgrade program from SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2008, giving the opportunity to be SQL Server 2008 certified really quickly.

The folks at MS Learning have confirmed that there will be a single test upgrade from MCITP DBA 2005 to the same for 2008. For that reason, I finishing 2005 now, and hope to move into 2008 earlier on in the product's life.
