Right forum for SCOM SQL questions?

  • Is this the right forum for questions related to SCOM as it applies to SQL Server monitoring?

I have been assigned a project for creating monitors and alerts on SQL blocking, deadlocks, large table scans, database file expansion etc.

Anyone have any suggestions on resources, links etc.?

Any experiences anyone would like to share on the subject?

  • I don't know if there is another forum for it. I've posted my own questions here.

Getting specific information regarding SQL Server and SCOM is tough. Definately you want to look at the Microsoft news group, microsoft.public.opsmgr.sql. I can't recommend SystemCenterForum.org enough. Great stuff. Not too much for the SQL Server guy, but in terms of general Operations Manager knowledge, it's great. There's also "Everything System Center Operations Manager 2007. decent stuff. The Operations Manager 2007 wiki is useful. The Microsoft Operations Manager Team Blog is good, but again doesn't cover SQL Server well enough. Another Microsoft blog that's helpful is the System Center Operations Manager Command Shell. Another place that has useful information is Thinkwork. I post a few of my fumbling attempts at understanding over at Home of the Scary DBA.

There are two books on the topic. One, Mastering SCOM, pretty much sucks, and the other, SCOM Unleashed, is fantastic, but again, light on the database side.

Steve is going to publish a short article I wrote about gathering data into a rule from TSQL. I'm not sure when it's scheduled to go though.

That's everything I've got. I hope others post some more stuff.

  • Grant, thanks so much for all this info, this is great!

I will definitely look at the links you have posted and make use of them. It's also great to know there is somebody on this forum with knowledge on this subject! 🙂

I'm a newbe with SCOM, but I have the feeling it is potentially a very powerful tool, so I want to learn and use it in depth.

I have the SCOM 2007 Unleashed book. It's fantastic, especially once you get over its phone-book size! 🙂

    Looking forward to your article.

  • Just so long as you quantify your post to read "some knowledge" because I'm basically a newbie on SCOM myself. I've been working with it for, probably close to three months at this point. That's barely enough time to scratch the surface. Post your questions, but post your solutions too. I need help as much as you do.

Oh, I will, by all means.
