BCP from Non SQL Servers

  • Frens,

Is it possible to run bcp command from a box where you do not have sql server or client installed.

    My opinion is NO.

    What you say?

    Regards

  • Are you conducting interview ?;)

Yes you are correct. It is not possible without client installed in local machine.

  • Thanks.

No I am not conducting an interview.

Just to confirm and satisfy myself, I try to find out the best possible thoughts / opinion from the GURUs.

    Thanks

  • Actually, that may not be the case. Some of the tools, can be run even without a full client installation, if they are copied over or accessed from a network share. I don't know, however, if that's the case with bcp. You would still need the appropriate client licenses to be legal, but it may be able to run without a tool installaion.

  • Brian is correct...

Yes... you can copy and register just the two BCP files. But, it's against the law and it breaks the licensing agreement. Microsoft does NOT license BCP separately and they state that if you search the Microsoft web site. I believe I found the exact verbage in association with MSDE and I'd post the URL, except they changed it and I haven't searched for the new URL.

RBAR is pronounced "ree-bar" and is a "Modenism" for Row-By-Agonizing-Row.
First step towards the paradigm shift of writing Set Based code:
________Stop thinking about what you want to do to a ROW... think, instead, of what you want to do to a COLUMN.

Change is inevitable... Change for the better is not.
