Reporting Services Editions / Licensing

  • I've managed to get completely confused.

What's the implications of running 2005 SSRS only, on a server, with the metadata databases on another SQL 2000 server? It's currently how it's run, with SSRS Standard.

I've been asked about licensing and cost to upgrade this SSRS installation to Enterprise to use Data Driven Subscriptions. Won't that require a SQL 2005 Enterprise backend?

We're already running a licensed SQL 2005 Enterprise server elsewhere, aren't we covered to use SSRS Enterprise on another server?

Have I even put this question in the correct Forum? :hehe::unsure:

  • Per SQL 2005 licensing: running ANY component of SQL Server 2005 on a given server requires that that server be fully licensed for SQL 2005.

Meaning - it really doesn't matter that SSRS 2005 happens to be connecting to 2000 to get some or all of its data. It needs to be licensed to accomodate however many report users you need.

If you intend to use the SSRS capabilities for Enterprise - then that's what needs to be purchased server-license-wise.

Here's one of the "big" documents used to explain all of this:

Your lack of planning does not constitute an emergency on my part...unless you're my manager...or a director and above...or a really loud-spoken end-user..All right - what was my emergency again?

  • Thanks Matt, that's perfect, exactly what I was looking for!

    Rob.
