Question on Security using default instance on clusters

  • My network guys are in the proccess of clustering our SQL Servers. SQL 2005/Window2003/ active-active

They went ahead and installed the SQL, but instead of taking the default instance added an instance name.

So now we  have to connect to clus1/clus1 instead of clus1 (default).

Most of applications connect via IP, now they would have to connect using the ip/instancename

When I asked why he didn't just take the default for each install he said he thought it was a

    security risk.

I always take the default on the first SQL Install and then if I'm adding another instance, give it another name.

What is the best practice for this setup?

    Thanks

    Susan

  • I hope your network guy is right when you say active/active cluster. Use named instances in active/active clusters.

  • So it's more of a setup configuration needed for active/active than it is for security?
