apply SP2 with 0 downtime

  • We have an active passive cluster - windows 2003, sql 2005 standard, is it possible to apply SP2 with 0 downtime? if not, what configuration of hardware, if any would allow it?

applying a service pack will cause some downtime, no matter what hardware or configuration you have because you need to restart the services.

With database mirroring you could failover to a mirror server before applying the SP, but even then you will have a couple of seconds downtime. Also mirroring is a database availabilty solution not the whole server. So if you have lot's of databases which need to be available mirroring is no option.

other than mirroring i would love to find a way to run a SP with no downtime. SP2 is pretty nice in that you don't need to run it on both nodes like previous service packs

  • Thank you, that's what I thought, but my boss keeps telling me other people are doing it. And mirroring is not an option for us because you can't mirror MSDB and our application uses database mail continuously .
