Hi all,
I'm just a bit curious about the behavior of the "Max server memory" setting...
I was experimenting the other day and set the "Maximum server memory" setting in the server properties dialog box to 100 Meg. After restarting the server and running a few queries I noticed the memory use for the sqlserver.exe process was over 200 meg.
I looked on BOL and it said something about the setting just limits how much memory the data buffers use, but other processes will use memory as well thus the setting and the value you see may differ. (I should say so! 🙂
Anyway, 2 questions:
1) Am I understanding this correctly?
2)Is there a way to actually see which SQL server components/processes are actually using up the 200 Meg and how much each is using?
thanks!

Dennis,
The best way to see what SQL process are using up the memory is go into System Monitor and choose the regular OS memory counters as well as whatever SQL Server memory counters are there.
