Hi,
While connecting remote SQL server through upgrade advisor I am getting the below errors:
Error: Unable to connect to server. Reason: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)
Pls let me know if anyone has faced this issue and know how to fix.
Thanks in advance

Hi, is your SQL Server behind a firewall? If so, are the rules setup correctly on the FW to allow port access? Error 26 sounds like a firewall rule or DNS issue. Also check that the SQL Browser service is running. Cheers.

I haven't run the analyzer for a while, so my memory is a little fuzzy. I believe I ended up loading the analyzer program locally to the server being analyzed. Try that and see if that gets you around the issue. Assuming, of course, that you can remote into the server and run the prgram 'as if' you are local. Otherwise, I suspect it's a combination of the different access rules (magic?) that govern connectivity. Also, make sure that your login-id has sufficient privileges at the system level - you will need rights to access the registry on the server at a minimum.
As I recall, the Analyzer is a 3rd party program that MS provides. Makes one wonder about the tales behind that...
