SQL2KSP2: setup error

    I am getting this error:

    Setup unable to verify the state of the server for an upgrade. Verify the server is able to start and that you provided a valid sa password and restart setup.

    I have tried SA with services up and down ( I have registered the database with SA in Enterprise manager) and have tried tried Window Auth both ways.

    Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.

    i had same problem. I reviewed the %winnt%/sqlsp.log file to verify that the problem was regarding a space in path statement. I modified my temp and tmp environment variables to be my local c:\temp drive. Then re-ran the SP3 upgrade.
