Vic,
Never seen anything like that. What are you installing on? (OS/SP), any other SQL services?

Hi Steve,
Thanks for your reply, appreciate it so much... My OS is Windows XP Home Edition SP2. With 2GB RAM, Dual-Core Processor. I think I have met the SQL Server Express Ed reqt. Yes, I have installed some SQL Services like Oracle and MySQL. My goal is to learn the basics of these SQL Services since I am pursuing a career in Business Intelligence. I really dont know if these SQL Services conflicts the installation. Does it?

Vic, open up your Services window and check the service named Protected Storage. It should be running. If not, that's the likely culprit, so start it up and try again.
Also, while I'm guessing you're past this point already, I'll toss it out just in case. Make sure you are logged on with an administrator account.
If the above doesn't solve this, you might want to post it in a different forum, such as SQLServer 2005 Express forum, as this is likely one of the least read forums on the board (other than Steve, who might actually wander in here ).

Hi David,
I did checked the services.msc and Protected Storage is running. I am also logged on as Administrator.
I already posted this issue in MSDN Forum under the SQL Server Setup and Upgrades, here are the links: http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2000565&SiteID=1 and http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1981932&SiteID=1. It is sad that nobody really replied on this issue.
I even attempted to call Microsoft and they said that they can help me but of course with a fee. I am not really ready to pay them hourly just to install the express edition.
If you have any other ideas please let me know... Thanks for your time and effort...

No idea on what's wrong. Any chance you can grab a copy of Virtual PC, setup a machine and install it in there? There might be some conflict, though it seems more like an OS conflict of some sort from your first post.

Hello!
Amy Lewis from SQL Server Team found a workaround for this problem. This is his explanation:
"Setup failed to call CryptProtectData API that returned error 2 (The system cannot find the file specified). This is most likely because some Crypto registry keys used the user profile are corrupted. A workaround could be to create a new user on that machine, add this new user to the administrator group, logon as this new user and rerun the setup under the new account."

Creating a local account worked for me.
Many thanks.
