Developer Edition stand-alone Vista: WON"T RUN!!!

  • I am thoroughly frustratated and practically postal.

At my job, they finally decided to go to MSSQL 2005.  I develop reports, mostly using Excel with MSQuery and VBA.

Now I need to learn how to use Reporting Services, Integration Services, and Analysis Services in order to provide Business Intelligence for my business users.

I decided to make an investment in myself.  I bought a new computer with the *latest* operating system, Vista.  I bought it with Office 2007 pre-installed.

I bought Visual Studio 2005 Tools for Office, and I bought SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition.

After some struggles, I got Visual Studio past all the "known compatibility problems."

Now, I have been trying for over a month to install SS2K5.  I purposely *purchased* the DEVELOPER edition so that I could practice with ALL of the services, including Reporting Services.  I am NOT using the express edition.

I have made sure that IIS is installed and acctivated, etc.  When I type 'localhost' in the address bar, IIS comes up -- so, yes it is installed.

Nevertheless, when I try to install SS, it tells me that RS will not be installed because IIS is not available.

If I go ahead and install, and then apply SP2, I CANNOT re-run the installation from the disk in order to add in RS.  I get a message that says another version of the program is installed, and this one won't run at all (it does not recognize its younger brother!)

Now, I can't even log on to any database, such as AdventureWorks.

Why would Microsoft go so far out of their way to create and sell two products that simply WILL NOT work together??????

I have googled and searched, and it appears others are having similar problems, but so far, I have found no solution that works.

PLEASE!!! Help me keep my job, so I can pay for this stuff!!!

    Thanks,

    Marty

  • I have the same problem. What I do for seeing a report is to export to pdf from Report Designer preview. I know that my approach does not fix the problem, altough I can go further with report development.

  • Have you tried the detailed steps here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934164 ?

Which version of Vista are you running?

  • Home Premium

  • I think you'll need another version for Vista. I got a Vista Entreprise based laptop (1GB RAM, Intel Centrino Duo processor) and all of the SQL 2K5 features work fine.

    Regards.

  • Take a look at this & scroll down to "Operating System Requirements (32-Bit)"

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506.aspx

It states that all 32-bit versions of Vista (except for Starter Edition) do support the 32-bit version of SQL Server Developer Edition, provided that you install SS2005 SP2.

  • You're right William...hum...that's strange...hey, wait: all versions of Vista (except for Starter Ed.)support the SQL 2K5 engine...but how about the other stuff needed for Reporting Services?

  • That same article also contains a link to "installing IIS7 on Vista" didn't look at it, maybe there's a clue in there.

You also need the .NET Framework 2.0, and for that you need the MS Installer MSI 3.0. Not sure if all that stuff is part of the default Vista installation.

  • Hi William and Aaron,

    Thanks for your replies.

I read the article referenced in the link some time ago.

    Here is my check list:

Monitor: SQL Server graphical tools require VGA or higher resolution: at least 1,024x768 pixel resolution. Check; it is 1,024x768.

Pointing Device: A Microsoft mouse or compatible pointing device is required. Check.

A CD or DVD drive, as appropriate, is required for installation from CD or DVD media.  Check.

Cluster Hardware Requirements -- not sure what this is, but I think it is irrelevant in my configuration.

Network software requirements for the 64-bit versions of SQL Server 2005 are the same as the requirements for the 32-bit versions. Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, and Windows 2000 have built-in network software.  Vista is not mentioned, but I believe I am covered here.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1 or later is required for all installations of SQL Server 2005.  Check; I have 7.0.6000.

IIS 5.0 or later is required for Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services (SSRS) installations.

1Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1 or later is required for SQL Server Management Studio, Business Intelligence Development Studio, and the Report Designer component of Reporting Services.

Check; IIS 7.0 installed (activated) per instructions in article referenced in link within the KB article.

SQL Server Setup requires Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 or later.  Check; File version 4.0.6000.16386.

SQL Server Setup requires Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.8 SP1 or later.  Check; (The component checker is not aware of Vista, but the file version numbers indicate Version 2.8.  Besides, I downloaded it when I first read this article, just to be "safe".  If this doesn't come with Vista, shame on Microsoft.

    Processor: Intel Core 2 CPU 6700 @ 2.66 GHz.

    Memory: 2.99 GB.

Hard Drive: 222 GB; 172 GB Free.

Vista Home Premium / SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition:

7Requires SQL Server 2005 SP2 on Windows Vista.  Check; installed after SS2K5 installation.

I believe that covers everything in the KB article.

    Any further suggestions?

    Thanks!

    Marty

  • Maybe the technet article was wrong about the Vista versions supported.

Have you looked at the link that Ian posted? It does not mention Vista Home as one of the supported OS's for Reporting Services.

I opened SSMS and clicked Community ~ Ask a Question and did a bit of searching - you're not going to like this:

"IIS7 on Vista Home Premium does not support Windows Authentication. This explains why your pre-requisites check for RS fail and you cannot install RS on your Vista Home Premium."

    Here's the full story:

    http://www.iis.net/default.aspx?tabid=2&subtabid=25&i=1100

    Looks like Aaron was correct.

  • In Vista, you can go into Control Panel ~ Windows Anytime Upgrade and purchase & install an upgraded version of Vista.

Before you open your wallet though, do some Google-ing to see if anybody else has found a workaround - a short story:

My HP Pavilion came preinstalled with Windows XP Home which does not include IIS. However I found an article that described how to install IIS on XP Home, if you had a Win 2000 CD. One such artcle is at http://adamv.com/dev/articles/iis-on-xp-home and it did work just fine. Unrelated to that, after 3 months my Maxtor disk failed and I wound up buying the XP Pro upgrade and put that on the new disk.

So perhaps somebody else has found a solution to your problem. Ultimately though, upgrading from Home Premium will probably be more compatible in the long run with any other new software you need to install.

  • It appears my only option is to spend more money.

I just wish Uncle Bill would make it clear what works with what and what doesn't.  It doesn't make for very good customer relations -- oh, I forgot: we aren't customers, we are slaves to the autocratic dominance of Microsoft.

    Sheesh!

    Thanks for the help.

  • Marty -

I've been frustrated by the same issues until just now.

I'm running Vista Business (not Home), with Office 2007 & IIS 6 and have been trying to install SQL 2005 Dev Edition without any luck now for 2 days.

The solution I found is this,

Firstly, uninstall all SQL 2005 elements via Control Panel / Programs and Features.

Secondly, install Office 2003 web components, fortunately I had a disc of Office 2003 Pro Edition lying around and found the Web Compents in the 'Office Tools' section. No other part or piece needs to be installed from the disc.

Once I had this installed, my installation ran as smoothly as a new-born's bum. Of course, I had to install SQL Server 2005 SP2 once the regular installation finished.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hi Declan,

I upgraded to Vista Ultimate, (which was a trip in itself) and got up and running.  Somewhere on this site there is a thread with the details.  I would link it to this one, but I can't figure out how.  You can probably find it if you search.

    Thanks for your reply, though!

    Marty

  • Here is Marty's other thread, many more details about getting Vista, SS2005, IIS and SSRS all working together
