SQL2005, linked servers, and "unexpected catastrophic failure" error

  • Recently, we've been experiencing a very frustrating situation whereby a linked server from SQL 2005 to either MySQL or to Sybase will fail, intermittently, generating an "unexpected catastrophic failure" error.

The end result is a hung process that cannot be killed, ultimately forcing a reboot of sql server.

A case has been (re)opened at Microsoft regarding this serious problem:

One person posted a possible solution on sqlservercentral.com for mysql, but that solution has yet to prove itself.

Does anybody have a solution to this issue?

    Thanks in advance,

  • A.J.:

Thanks for your willingness to help. Unfortunately, our linked server to Sybase is configured as described in the microsoft forum link you provided; works most of the time, but not all the time. So, something else is at fault here. Plus, it doesn't solve the issue of an unreliable linked server to MySQL.

    Any other suggestions welcome!
