Connecting to X500 - Active Directory

  • OK, here's a pointless requirement. The boss wishes me to document the security access to every bloody application I have installed. S'funny, how software companies spend millions on user access management, I have many many applications with well documented and easy to understand permissions structures. But this isn't good enough for the AUDITORS is it? Oh no, for they are bean counters and do not understand the ways of the nerd, they only understand things if they are in EXCEL, and I hate them.

So, does anyone know how to access Active Directory to download a user list??

This would be a useful start.

  • Richard -

Log in to your AD server as a Domain Administrator and go to

Start\Administrative Tools\Active Directory Users And Computers.

When open, go to View and select Add\Remove Columns.  Select the

columns you need (I select Name, Display Name, and User Logon Name

for my User List table)  When you have your columns selected,

right-click on Users (in the Left-hand column) and select

Export List.  I just send it to my Temp directory as Tab-delimited.

You can open it up in Excel if you need to modify any of the columns.

    Save and your done.
