Day 1

  • TechEd 2007

I came down to Orlando for TechEd 2007 and it's been an interesting day. I'm trying to blog real time while I'm down here and got a few posts in if you're interested.

I've forgotten how big this conference really is. After a few years of only attending the PASS Summit, which is a 1000-2000 person event, it's amazing how much bigger this 10,000+ person event is. The scale is just huge and the hallways are never empty. Hundreds of people are walking around at any given time and it makes it a little chaotic.

It also means that when a session gets overwhelmed, it really gets overwhelmed. I'm not sure how to fix that, but at least they've noted in the schedules when sessions are duplicated. By that I mean they've already scheduled some sessions for 2 times.

TechEd is a great event to attend if you can, mostly because you see so many different people here: Exchange, SMS (now System Manager and Operations Center), AD people, etc. It really allows you to meet and talk to people in many other areas.

But it's also a large conference and there are some good SQL developers here from Microsoft that can help you solve problems, especially in the chalk talks.

I still think the PASS Summit is the best place to network and talk to strictly SQL Server people, but TechEd is a good second choice.

  • Hi Steve,

It sounds like Tech-Ed has grown since my 2001 attendance. I liked it so much that I decided to attend PDC that was held in LA that year in the fall. My choice, Tech-Ed by far... 🙂

Can't wait to attend again sometime, but so far, haven't had an employer that sees the need. I guess I learned to much or too little in 2001...

And, even though I paid for it myself, and attended on my time, I still think it was worth the price.

Now when am I going to make it a priority again... 🙂
