is it possible to log into SQL 2000 Analysis Services from SQL 2005 Management Studio? I tried but no luck.

Don't know about 2000.

if you have AS 2005, all that is not necessary if the server is visible on the network. Just type the AS instance name (either a default or named instance) into the connection dlg and you can connect.
I would say it's not recommended to expose an AS box to the web, as the article seems to recommend. SQL Server should not be exposed to the web either. That is unless you want to present a nice fat attack surface to criminals who would like to steal your data...
