A reader sent me a note a few weeks ago about someone they'd run into on CodeProject that was in some trouble. I dug in a bit and it's someone I thought was worth a little help from me. We ran a note last week and now I'm giving a touch more detail. Thanks to everyone that's donated and to date we've raised a couple thousand dollars.

I've got three kids and I've had the unfortunate need to run all of them to the emergency room at some point in their lives. My 4 visits have been for a bump on the head (car accident), a cracked finger, a laceration needing 8 stitches, and bad burns requiring bandaging and a week of care. However there are no real side effects and the net result for my kids at this point is there's been no affect on their lives. They're healthy and happy in their lives.

I hope the rest of you never need to head to the ER for any reason and I can't imagine what Rex Winn is going through. He's documented some of his story on a web site, whose name says it all: http://www.notreadytogiveup.com/. Rex isn't giving up on his daughter, but the financial burden has been tough and he's giving up on some of his pride by asking for help. You can also get a little of Katie's story and see updates from Rex in the discussion.

And I'm asking you to help as well.

I use the word "problems" in conversation with friends and family, but the reality is that I don't have any real problems. I have a great life and family and no real problems, just minor inconveniences. I try to stop and remember just how great the roses in my life are and how lucky I've been.

Many of us in IT have good lives. Despite the stress and long hours we make good salaries and work in pretty good environments. And I'm sure you get asked for charitable donations all the time, especially in the US. So while I think this is a good cause, I've also raised some donations from my employer, Red Gate, as well as my company with Andy and Brian, End to End Training. We're basically setting up a Raffle for Katie to try and help out a fellow coder here in the US.

So skip Starbucks or lunch out for a day or so and buy a ticket to the raffle. And I want to thank everyone in advance for their support, both now for Katie and in the past for others.

  • The page that the raffle link points to says donations are for 'http://www.readytogiveup.com' - that's a typo, right?

  • I believe that http://www.readytogiveup.com was the original site.

The latest one is http://www.notreadytogiveup.com which better reflects Rex's (and his family's) attitude to this mammoth hurdle! There's a donate link on there too.

  • We have a good life indeed - I just have to look at "one day in the life of an Iraqi" to appreciate the enormous good fortune we all have - tyrannical managers, job dissatisfaction, barking neighborhood dog that keeps us up all night....everything pales when you put things in perspective...

Keep up the good work Steve!

  • Thanks for the note, I'll change the raffle page. If you go to the old site, it will point to the new one on the page.

BTW, that change was a suggestion from one of our community.

  • Oh, I see.  Good change, well made
