2005 reporting services!

  • Hi I am in the process of building a test server.  I just installed SQL 2005 from the DVD onto a test server and I don't see the reporting services databases?  (No SP1 or SP2 yet).  How do I tell if SQL2005 reporting services is installed and running?  We want to build the test server up to the level of the live server SQL2005 SP1 before I restore the databases.  Shouldn't reporting services databases be created in the initial install?  Should I go ahead and install SP1 to get the reporting services activated?

I can see the reporting services databases on the live server but not on the test server.

Also do I restore the reporting services database from the live server onto the test server?

    Thanks, newbie under the gun!

  • Dana,

the first thing I would check is if the service for reporting services is installed. If that's the case, when probably RS has not been configured yet. To do that, open "Reporting Services Configuration" from the start menu. Running the configuration utility will create the databases and the virtual directory on your webserver.

I wouldn't restore the databases from the production system, because the database contain a lot of server specific data. So you might create more problems like that. But then again I've never tried it.

  • Thanks, I went into RS configuration and set it up like the Live server but I still don't see the Reporting Services Databases.

Unfortunately the books I purchased don't say much about it. Is there a on-line like that might be helpful?  I have the SQL Server 2005 Bible and the MS-Sql Server 2005 the complete refernce!!

Any additional help will be appreciated. thanks.

  • Reporting services is  tricky because SQL Server 2005 installer will skip it if you don't have IIS installed because it uses IIS, so make sure IIS is installed and when you get to choose components the Reporting Services component will appear so you can choose it.  Hope this helps.

  • Thanks for the tip.  I did get the databases created and it's running.  When I went into the RS configuration tool I entered a database name without pressing the "NEW" button first.  I needed to do that first!  Yes, IIS was not installed the first time I installed from DVD.  I ran setup again and installed it when the IIS was installed and running.  Then Applied SP1.

Now I am about to test the SP2 install using version 9.0.3042.1  (Refresh version)....

Thank you all for the replys.
