Moving reports from 2005 - 2000

  • Morning,

Don't know if anyone can help me - I've been using 2005 evaluation and we found Reporting Services very useful, so I got hold of a copy and installed it on my SQL 2000 server.

Problem is my eval has run out. I'm pretty sure I can just lift a few files from the 2005 eval machine and stick them in relevant places in the 2000 server.

Question is, which files and where to put them????

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

    Richard

  • That is not an easy task at all. If you can log into the 2005 report server and then "Edit" each report's definition, then you can save those report (rdl) files. Once saved, you'll need to open each one up in notepad and remove any reference to "interactive height" and "interactive width" and save them.

Now upload these files to your existing RS 2000 server and set up the data sources.

    This assumes:

-that you can get to the '05 report server.

-that you have an existing RS 2000 server up and running

You see, the problem is, that the report definitions (RDL) files exist in the Report Server Database. going from 2005 to 2000, or even the other way around manually is not an easy task. There are all sorts of relationships and security encryptions saved in the DB that will undoubtably muck everything up.

I guess a better questions is how did you create your reports? Can you not just publish the reports to the 2000 server instead of the 2005. Assuming you created them in Visual Studio and have them saved.

  • Look at this nifty little utility to pull out the RDL XML of a report.

After that, you modify anything you need and then resubmit it to the other version.
