I'm not sure if this is the right forum to post this question. So please let me know if it should be somewhere else 😎
I'm installing a third part application that uses MSDE 2000 Sp3a, which has been setup with the default settings and is only listening on shared memory.
I've setup a connection from BDE using the MSSQL driver but it's telling me that it can't connect.
error message is :-
Cannot locate or connect to SQL server.
Unable to connect: SQL Server is unavailable or does not exist. Unable to connect: SQL Server does not exist or network acces
When I change MSDE to listen on TCP/IP or Named Pipes, BDE can then connect. But this kind of defeats the purpose of listening on shared memory and the security reasons that go with that etc...
From what I've gleaned from the net it could be that BDE can only connect using using Named pipes or TCP/IP but I can't find any confirmation of this.
Has anyone seen similar problems? Anything would be greatfully received.

You need a full SQL Server 2000 you could still get the developer edition for under $20.00 online or if your employer own an existing license you could get the personal free register the MSDE and go to the MSDE server properties and network configurations and you can enable both TCP/IP and Named Pipes. I don't think you can run it without both but I could be wrong. Hope this helps.
