Step up License - Standard to Enterprise

  • Hi,

I am working out a strategy for a small but rapidly expanding company, who are interested in using SQL 2005. At present I cannot justify the additional cost of Enterprise version , but buying Standard addition with the option of upgrading to Enterprise version would be a good policy.

I have phoned around a couple of suppliers and they said it could not be done, but I then found the Enterprise Edition Step-up license on http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/resources/volbrief.mspx which states:

"Customers with Software Assurance, an Enterprise Agreement, Select License or Open License Value may migrate from Standard Edition software to Professional or Enterprise Edition software while maintaining their Software Assurance coverage on a given product. The Step-up License makes it easier for customers to upgrade from a Standard to Enterprise Edition without incurring the full cost of licensing two separate editions of the software. Customers can upgrade their license as their company and needs grow."

On pointing this out to suppliers , they have no part number for this and on further pushing they said we would have to upgrade to a Select Agreement, which in too big for my client.

Has anyone done this or know any more ?

Microsoft talk about easier, but I'm not seeing it that way !

  • Just noticed that this is in the wrong forum , I have created a new on in correct Administering forum
