The Memory Game
We all know that SQL Server depends heavily on RAM. In fact, one of the first things people often suggest in our forums and in other places is that you add memory to your database server. If you have 2GB, move to 4GB. If you have 4GB, think about 8GB in your next server. It's probably one of the big reasons that SQL Server 2005 now can use 4GB with the standard edition.
This week we had a few announcements about technologies that may speed up computing. One in particular looked at faster memory chips. The technology is primarily being developed to build chips for handheld devices (MP3 players, cell phones, etc), but it holds the promise of faster throughput for transactions. IBM, who has mostly exited the memory business, is very interested and you can bet they'll be looking to take advantage of this technology in their Power series servers as well other DB2 systems.
And at potentially 500 times the speed of current flash chips, this could hold some interesting ideas for applications, like embedded system that boot quicker. With quite of bit being done on small SQL Server systems (with Express and Mobile editions), this could mean running more types of database-based applications and storing more data in small form factors.
I haven't done any work with the small editions, but I admit that I'd like to. I'd be interested to see how easy it is to build an application on a PDA type device running SQL Server and use it in a practical way. Now if my wife would just get me a PDA for Christmas.
And I could find an application I need.

Need? What does need have to do with getting cool, new toys?
So long, and thanks for all the fish,

You did drop hints to your wife that you want a PDA for Christmas, right? Like "Honey, I really want that new Dell Axim for Christmas" (or whichever PDA you're shooting for)?
Not sure how your wife works, but sometimes, having our husbands tell us exactly what they want works
