Does anyone have any insight into the SQL Server 2005 Express version for VS2005? Specifically I am a DBA who doesn't want the developers having a local running SQL Server. Does anyone know if that is an option in the install or if it can be removed or diabled? I have looked so many placed but can not find a clear defined answer. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Don't give them SQL server. Just give them Visual Studio. They can design, troubleshoot, and run queries from there.

Do you have a resource that shows SQL 2005 Express is an optional install for VS2005? Right now I can't find proof that you can get around the install. They are saying it is a required piece of the install.

When I did the install it was required. It just created a local server on my machine. Not sure how to get around it. Sorry. I thought you were looking for a way developers did not have to install a server. which would be visual studio.

I can't - but have a look at the installation components, it's likely to be linked to one of them and neccessary for certain functions.
You want to hook up VS on their workstation to a development SQL server so the functionality continues - probably "SQL Server Projects" or the like.

IIRC it's one of the checkboxes in the custom install. I'm sure I've installed VS2005 without it.
