I have had merge replication running well between 2 sites for some months now but sometimes the merge agent stops running due to some error.
I would like to be proactive and detect replication merge agent failure before the users complain about their data being out of date.
Would it be possible to have an email sent when the agent fails? If so please help with a procedure to set up SQL email and how to set up an email alert to be sent on failure.
We are using SQL 2000 and the merge agent is set to run continuously.

I had exactly the same problem recently, and with some help created a script that can detect the stopped merge agent and restart it.
I have posted the script in a message in this thread
Sorry, I can't help with email alerts as my system has no need of email so does not have any mail server.

Configure SQL mail option and create an alert as per your requirement in the replication monitor and check the email option in the propertiers response tab.
It works try
