Also, does anyone know if Microsoft has stated when to expect the first Service Pack?

What exactly do you mean by a complete rewrite? I am fairly certain that they did not start from scratch, if that is what you mean.

Yes, I was wondering if they started from scratch on the 2005 Engine. It would help me determine whether or not to wait for the first SP. If it's totally new code, I might wait til SP1. If it's an enhancement on the 2000 Engine, then I'm less concerned about bugs.

When I went to the seminar MS said most of the ways the DB engine worked and the controls have been changed. So it is a rewrite in a way. It is an enhancement from 2K to allow better control.
