70-228 or 70-229?

  • Hi,

I’ve worked with development (VB) and DB administration for the last 5 years with small databases, just in the development environment. Most of the time with T-SQL and database design. And just a few times I’ve faced with installing/configuring and security stuffs.

Now, Certification became an issue in my company and I’m wondering taking the MCDBA tests. My doubt is: What exam should a study and take first? The 70-228 or the 70-229?

I believe  70-229 will be easier considering my experience, and after take and pass this exam I should try 70-228.

I would like to hear the thoughts of people who are studding or get taken these exams.

    Any opinion will be appreciated.

P.S. I’ve never get contact with Yukon.

  • That is the same way I did it.  I did 228 first because it's all about T-SQL, etc..  If you know that, 229 will come easier.  IMHO.  I write 229 in a week, and the studying so far is going a lot better.

  • I think you are correct.  The 70-229 test will be easier for you to take first.  I completed my MCDBA two years ago.  I recommend reading this book to prepare for the test:

Training Guide (70-229): SQL Server 2000 Database Design and Implementation

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0789729970/sr=8-3/qid=1153232890/ref=sr_1_3/103-9164614-0695867?ie=UTF8

For the 70-228 test, be prepared for a different experience.  There are many exhibit questions on the 70-228 test where you must study a diagram or scenario and then answer the question.  The hardest part of the 70-228 test is budgeting your time because of all the exhibit questions.

If you have not taken a Microsoft test before, I recommend buying the practice tests from Transcender:

    http://www.transcender.com/product.aspx?product%5Fid=Cert%2D70%2D229&dept%5Fid=100420

This will help you understand the types of questions on the test.  It will also help you identify your weak areas before taking the test.  Always research any question that you get wrong on the practice test.

Finally, after you take the real test and you have left the test room, write down some notes about the questions that were difficult for you.  There is some overlap between the 70-229 test and the 70-228 test.  Study the topics that you thought were difficult during the test.  Good luck!

  • To piggy-back on the others, go with where your experience is. That would be 70-229.
