I need to install 2005 on a development machine without disturbing the current 2000 installation. When I try, the installation routine seems to want to upgrade the existing DB.

if you are using the GUI, you have an option to install a new instance (so not upgrating the existing instance of sql2000)

Don´t Upgrade just install a new instance, SQL2005 and SQL2000 can live in same box
Just have fun...
