utter lamer question - SQL 2005 data into SQL 2000 server

  • Hi

to start with, i know utterly nothing about SQL server - Im a hardware sys admin and can design you a network from here to the moon if you wanted, but the sql stuff that im being asked to do is making me want to break down and cry like a baby.

I have sql 2005 workgroup edition, and a database in it that I need to get to run on a SQL 2000 server.

After extensive googling and trial and error I have found you simply cant do a backup and restore. The Export wizard took 4 hours to complete and created vast files with nothing in them (apart from tables) that compressed down to 3mb. I was sure this was the way forward but now i want to kill someone - preferably the developer who DIDNT write a 'convert to sql 2000 & restore to server x' button.

Can someone please tell me how to accomplish my task? can someone tell me in PAINFUL detail? - i know NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING about SQL.

    PLEASE HELP ME

  • wow. thanks.

  • Alastair,

Did you use the import/export wizard to do your export?  You should be able to right click on your database, go to tasks/export data.  Select your SQL 2005 server as the source server/database & then select your SQL 2000 server as the destination server/database.

Select Copy data from one or more tables or views.  Then you should be able to select the tables that you want copied over.  Depending on how many tables you are exporting, you may want to check the Optimize for many tables option.  It may help or it may not, I haven't used it yet.  Then you should be able to execute it now or schedule it.  It should then go through the steps to export the data.  It should be that easy.

    HTH,

    John
