Hello all,
I am thinking about moving all backups off local servers and onto shared drives.
I did a quick test to see how much slower writing to the shared drive would be.
To run a full backup on about a 10G database locally it took about 2 minutes.
To run the same backup to the shared drive took about 9 minutes.(yikes)
What concerns me most is how this will effect performance when transaction logs are written to the shared drive.
Does anybody using shared drives for backups take a heavy performance hit?
Thanks,
B

Nearly everybody who backs up across the network takes a performance hit. And a reliability hit. Period. The question is whether it is "good enough" for you. Personally, I wouldn't do it unless forced by circumstances.

Thanks,
I am going to rethink the process. I don't really want to go with a "good enough" plan.
