Cannot see Publications on remote server

  • I have created a Publication on my remote web server and would like to create a new Subscription on my local server.  Remote server is Windows 2003 Server, local server is Small Business Server 2003, both SQL instances are SQL 2000 Standard.

When I try to create the Subscription when connected to my local server, I see the remote server listed with a plus sign, but clicking the plus sign shows no Publications.  I can log on to the remote server and create the Subscription on my local server via Enterprise Manager.  The Snapshot Agent runs ok. but the Subscription gets the error "The process could not connect to Distributor XYZ"

Anyone have any ideas what's wrong?

    Thanks,

    Brian

  • Are the servers in different domains ?   If so, you might need to create a "push" subscription on the same server as the publisher instead of a "puul" subscription at the subscriber.

Is there a firewall between the two servers?  If so, you may need to arrange to have port 1433 (or whatever other port you have reconfigured SQL Server to listen on) opened.  I would guess that the snapshot replication is working because it uses FTP, drive mapping, or even CD copying to transfer the data from one server to another.

  • I think the reason we needed a "push" subscription was that although the ports were open, our remote web server (publisher) would not allow requests from other servers, it had to initiate the request to send the data to our internal server.  Perhaps a combination of this & John's advice will help

  • Thanks for the replies from you both.  John, port 1433 is open so that was not the problem ( though it was part of it a few days ago before I opened that port ).  Yes, the servers are in different domains, and yes homebrew01, I needed to create a Push subscription.  Now it works, thank you both!
