In recent days I've noticed a new behavior on my windows2000 & 2003 SQL 2000 boxes. From the EM in main screen I open security->logins->and then pick a user...I double click and then select database access. I pick a database they currently don't have access to and select ok. EM prompts for a password. No matter what I put in there it says its wrong.
If I go to the database itself, and select users I can add the exact same user and put them in the role, EM never prompts for a password.
The exact same behavior of prompting for a password happens if I select a user and try to change their default database...I have to script the change in order for this to work. Any ideas...?
I've tried doing a profiler trace of the behavior but nothing is exhibited. I thought it was a workstation issue..but the behavior is also exhibited on the server, using the server's EM.

This is a bug. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/826161
SYMPTOMS
After you install MS03-031: Cumulative Security Patch for SQL Server, when you make changes to a standard SQL Server login by using Enterprise Manager, you are prompted for a password, even if you did not change the password. If you did not change the password, you cannot successfully close the dialog box, regardless of the entry that you use.

Carl,
I can't say thanks enough I have been loosing my mind over this extremely iritating thing. I checked kb articles, guess I wasn't phrasing it correctly to find the error.

OK...I applied the hotfix successfully...is there something else I need to do...cause it's still prompting?
