MSDE Question

  • I just inherited a MSDE environment with serveral databases within the instance.

I was able to register the instance via EM but could not see any of the databases. With Query Analyze I was able to see the dbs but am concerned that something's not right (I don't want to go too much further until I understand the proper way to access/maintain the MSDE instance).

Ultimately I need to do some long overdue maintenance, etc (essentially the User/Department who installed/used the databases gave me the job because they ran out of space on the drive where everything is stored - and I need to shrink/backup/truncate the tempdb log file).

Anyone out there with MSDE experience?

    Thanks,

    Glenn

  • I'm not sure why you can't see the databases via EM, but you should be able to do all the maintenance you need from within QA.

After, aren't all the tasks you perform in EM using DB stored procs or xp's?

  • Do you have a firewall on that box the MSDE sits on?

I think you may need to open UDP 1434 to access the SQL Server via EM.

  • I'm thinking... REFRESH, REFRESH, REFRESH again.

RBAR is pronounced "ree-bar" and is a "Modenism" for Row-By-Agonizing-Row.
First step towards the paradigm shift of writing Set Based code:
________Stop thinking about what you want to do to a ROW... think, instead, of what you want to do to a COLUMN.

Change is inevitable... Change for the better is not.
