books

  •

Could anyone please reccomend a good book on SQL Server 2000/T-SQL?

    thank you

  • Depends on your previous experience level.

If you go to amazon, and look for t-sql, they will show you a bunch of books, but off to the right under list mania, people have created lists of recommended books.

Look at them. Honestly I have not found a book series that stands much above any other book.

  • If you're at the begining/intermediate level the Murach's SQL for SQL Server by Bryan Syverson is a great book. If you're a little more advanced, The Guru's Guide to Transact-SQL by Ken Henderson (or any book at all by him, for that matter) is good. Advanced Transact-SQL for SQL Server 2000 by Ben-Gan and Moreau is also good.

Let me know if you have other ideas in mind and I'll see if I can make a recommendation.

  • I'm actually VERY new to SQL Server.   I have  a tad bit of open-source SQL programming, but nothing too advanced.

I'm looking to advance both my SQL knowledge and SQL Server administration knowledge.

    Thank you!

  • Well, those above are good for learning T-SQL. The Murach book is especially intended for Developers learning T-SQL.

Professional SQL Server 2000 Programming by Robert Vieira is good also. It covers much moer than just programming.

Check out the books section of this site for Admin titles. I haven't bought one of those in years, so I wouldn't want to recommend one. Funny, I do moer Admin than anything else, but I buy the programming books...

  • I've used the Murarch book and it is good.  For admin, try Mastering SQL Server 2000 by Mike Gunderloy and Joseph Jorden and for understanding the internals Inside SQL Server 2000 by Kalen Delaney.

  • wow, thanks guys...I appreciate your suggestions!
