transform hand written data

  • hi,

can anyone suggest a way to  transform millions of lines of handwritten records to a text format so as I can bring them into a db. the records share the same format : no., name, address, age etc but the hand writing changes as the records have been updated over 70 years.

    any feedback much appreciated.

    thanks in advance

  • It sounds like you are in for a big ol' heap of data entry. Could you use a service like

    ?

  • thanks for the reply,

im trying to avoid the manual data entry route as there is a large room full of records spanning 100 years....but there may be no other way...

  • Checkout some of the Opical Character Recognization (OCR) software vendors:

    OmniPage - http://www.scansoft.com/omnipage/standard/

    IRIS OCR - http://www.irisusa.com/

and some high-end, production-level (>100 pages per minute?) scanners that work with the OCR software. Depending upon the quality of the documents (clear, black text on white paper), the error rates should be low. I worked for a small startup (now defunct) where this technology was very effectively used for data entry purposes...

    Enjoy,

  • thanks for all the feedback on this...problem with outsourcing it overseas is that the data is very sensitive and there is only one copy held in a secure fireproof room...company would not like it to leave building let alone country.

looks like there is a huge data input project pending ... 🙁

  • well you can convert them to tiff images

and then send ot outsourcing location .

offcourse you have to put in resource to do that .
