Ah yes, the expected and well known deadline creep is occurring once again in Redmond. This time it's SQL Server 2005, though not in the traditional way. Usually the deadline for RTM slips and slips, creeping further out on your calendar. I guess that's happening since I originally expected SQL Server 2003 to ship a few years ago.
It's not 2005 and the deadline for ship is set. The week of November 7th, the RTM version will be announced, various events already planned during this week and the weeks afterwards and there's nothing that will change that. So no creep on the product, except for database mirroring and a little thing that hampers the CTP process called "upgrades".
I wrote yesterday about the release of the September CTP, in a botched, mis-coded, timed release that failed miserably. Still it was informative to me in a couple of ways. First of all it was nice to see the Sept CTP come out. I'd been hoping for an Aug release, but knowing the many SQL Server developers at Microsoft are busy getting ready for the PDC and PASS in September and that the bits need to be done by mid-Oct for RTM, I guess this makes more sense.
But two "features" crept out of this release and I doubt either of them will make it to RTM. First database mirroring, a highly desired feature for building highly available systems without clustering, was pulled and will be turned off in the RTM and not supported. A limited license will be available on a case-by-case basis, I'm guessing mostly to ensure that the servers have support both inside the company and at Microsoft. Since that's been one of the more talked about features, they must be having major difficulties to push that back. It's expected to be delivered in early 2006, so it will likely be available at PASS 2006 :
The second talked about feature, and one I was looking forward to, was the ability to upgrade from one CTP to the next. I'll admit that installing and uninstalling isn't the worst thing, but it is a pain. Especially worrisome for information that you've included in master and are worried about changes (a real worry) between builds. It was promised that from June on, you'd be able to upgrade, no more uninstall/reinstall. Apparently that's not the case. I tried the install, then removed VS 2005 (Beta 2) and then tried the install and around 11:30 last night I gave up and started the build cleanup utility to remove everything.
To be fair, I expect most people won't be upgrading from the CTP's to a live version in production, so maybe it's not a big deal. And if they are falling behind, I'd just as soon that feature drop than one of the others. Still, after nearly five years between versions, I'd hoped we were a little closer to being done.
