new to SQL Server 2000

  • Hello fellas i am new to SQL server i just installed it a few days back and i could only install client tools bcoz i don't have a server os  so could by any chance i build a database? or is it necessary to have server components? i am doing an academic project in .Net where i want to use a sql database. F1!!!!

  • you can install personal edition (aka Disk 2) on XP.

  • There are also trial versions available for download or with most certification books. They expire after a number of days, but they should get you started.

  • Go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=413744D1-A0BC-479F-BAFA-E4B278EB9147&displaylang=en

    Download and install MSDE (Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine)

    Then you can use client tools. 

  • What OS are you running?  You should have no problems on XP Pro or Win2K Pro, I wouldn't bet on (or try!) WinXP Home as it's largely an extension of Win98/ME.
